Dr. Hammam Yahya is a Palestinian psychiatrist, researcher in philosophy and thought, as well as an accomplished author and poet. He currently serves as the Executive Director of Behavioral Health at the University of New Mexico and is also an Associate Professor there. Dr. Yahya was awarded the prestigious Milton Rosenbaum Award in 2021, which recognizes faculty members in the Department of Psychiatry who exemplify exceptional productivity and creativity. He has appeared in numerous interviews on Al Jazeera, Alaraby TV, and the Finjan podcast (a very popular podcast in the Arab world), among other digital platforms, in addition to delivering lectures at universities and conferences worldwide.[1][2][3]
Academic Journey
[edit]Dr. Yahya's educational path includes the following milestones:[1][2]
- 2010: Earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Jordan.
- Completed a four-year residency in adult psychiatry at the University of New Mexico.
- 2018: Achieved certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
- Received a fellowship grant from the American Psychoanalytic Association.
- 2023: Obtained an Executive MBA degree.
Professional Experience

- 2011: Began as a lecturer at the Arab American University in Jenin, Palestine.
- 2013–2014: Worked as a physician with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) in Amman, Jordan.
- 2018: Joined the Department of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico, where he held several positions, including:
- Medical Director of Inpatient Services for Adults.
- Director of Quality and Safety for Adult Behavioral Services.
- Executive Director of Behavioral Health Services and Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico Hospitals.
