Draft:George Bailey Was Never Born

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George Bailey Was Never Born is a 2023 limited-run iHeartMedia podcast[1] narrated by the character of Angel Joseph from the classic holiday movie It's a Wonderful Life, a role originated by Joseph Granby and played in the podcast by actor Roy Sillings with the permission of Granby's family.[2] The series was created by Kurt Engfehr and Ray Nowosielski, unearthing and telling ten inspiring real life stories connected to It's a Wonderful Life and exploring the meaning of the movie and its characters. The angel narrator employs a multiverse device to assert that the events of the movie and those in our own universe both really happened, allowing a compare and contrast of both.[3]

The series unearthed a number of new facts about the movie, including details about its creation, supposed fall into public domain, the copyright claims by Republic Pictures in 1993 that led to the movie's long run on NBC, how it was re-popularized with the public in the early 1980s and its connections to the town of Seneca Falls, New York.[4] It raises questions about Paramount's continuing claims to the rights to the movie, as detailed in an article for The Nation.[5] The series theme song "George Bailey" was written and performed by the Carolyn Sills Combo.[6]
