Fort Duurstede Expedition

The Fort Duurstede Expedition was a millitary expedition conducted by Netherland East Indies Army to defeated Rebels in Fort Duurstede. The expedition resulted on the losses of Netherlands and their commanders also killed in this expedition.

Background

In 1817 the rebels under command of Pattimura attacked Fort Duurstede the rebels succeeded to captured the fort and killed 19 soldiers,and also the commander in the Fort Rudolf Van Berg and his family was killed only his youngest children still alive.[1][2][3][4]

And after this attack the dutch council decided to launched the military expedition to Fort Duurstede, they appointed Major Beetjes (Commander of Civil Enginer Corps) as the commander in this expedition. The expedition composed to 120 officers and 180 soldiers.[5][6]

Expedition

The expedition left on 17 May 1817 they marching to the Baguala Pass to find many boats and after arrived in Baguala Pass they decided to leaving 55 men for effectively movement at Haruku Regency and with the rest of his troops Beetjes going to Saparua and landed in Fort Duurstede.[5]

But it was impossible to landed in Fort Duurstede so the boats sailing into line abrast and landed in there,unfortunately the ground was harshy so they jumped to the fort.[7]

Pattimura forces were lying an ambush to Dutch troops the ambush was successfully and inflicting heavy casualties to the Dutch side and also they oppened fire accurately to the Dutch and make many Dutch troops killed include Major Beetjes. After this failed expedition and successfull ambush by rebels they decided to retreated into Fort Zeelandia.[7][6]

Aftermath

After Dutch Survivor troops retreated into Fort Zeelandia the Pattimura forces launched sieges to Fort Zeelandia. And also the expedition showed the strength of rebels and their supperior.[8]
