Dog Run is a 2024 British short drama film written, produced and directed by Lorna Nickson Brown. It stars Sid Phoenix and Paula Wharton. It was released on 23 August 2024 by Apple TV.
Phoenix plays a homeless migrant, caught in the grip of modern slavery in Wolverhampton, UK. Salvation comes through his growing connection to the natural world and another captive being – the German Shepherd guard dog at the site where he is held. The film explores a symbiosis between humankind, animal species, and the healing power of nature. Phoenix’s character, Jan, has no dialogue in the film.

Background
[edit]Lorna Nickson Brown entered the script for the film to Clermont Ferrand Film Festival x Kickstarter call for project development in 2021. The project was selected and funding was raised through a Kickstarter campaign.[1]
The film was shot over the course of a year in the West Midlands, UK.[2]
Score
[edit]British Filipino composer, Jonathan Escoto Brown[3], composed the film's original score.
Reception
[edit]Sunday Times bestselling author, Kiran Millwood Hargrave, reviewed the film as "Tender, beautiful, and achingly humane, Dog Run explores the interconnectedness of all things. A short and expansive piece of cinema."[4]
Major Kathy Betteridge, Director of Anti Trafficking and Modern Slavery for The Salvation Army which provides specialist support to recovering survivors of modern slavery in the UK, described the film as “a powerful and authentic story of labour exploitation.”
Dog Run is an albert certified short film. In 2023, BAFTA albert chose Dog Run as a case study and exemplar of best practice in sustainable short filmmaking.[2]
Release
[edit]Dog Run premiered at the 41st Flickers Rhode Island International Film Festival in 2023, where it won the Breaking Boundaries Grand Prize[5], an award given to “films that celebrate the endurance of the human spirit and resilience in the face of injustice.”
The film won Best Film at International Film Festival The Hague in 2023[6] and won Best UK Film by a Female Director at the Big Syn International Film Festival in 2023[7]. It also won the Best Supporting Actress Award for Paula Wharton at The British Short Film Awards in 2023[8]. The film was selected and nominated at 16 international film festivals.[9]
Dog Run was made available to stream on AppleTV on 23 August 2024 in United States, Canada, Anguilla, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Sweden, United Kingdom, Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines and Sri Lanka.[10]
The film was released on Prime Video through ShortsTV on 1 September 2024 in the Italy, France, Belgium, Sweden, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and the United States.[11]
