History

[edit]

Modern education introduced in the 1950s prioritized school-based learning, sidelining traditional skills, which neither gained social recognition nor became part of formal education.

Nepal's Formal vocational education began in the 1960s with institutions like the Butwal Training Institute (BTI) and the Mechanical Training Centre (MTC), which introduced apprenticeships, internships, and on-the-job training (OJT). The planned development of the TVET sector formally started in 1971. In 1989, the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) was established to manage TVET, offering formal and non-formal programs and affiliating with community and private providers. In 2018, CTEVT introduced a dual VET program in selected schools.

Currently, TVET programs are managed by federal, provincial, and local governments, alongside non-governmental and private organizations, ensuring wider access and opportunities across Nepal.[6]
