Abderrazak Yousfi is the co-founder and CEO of Media Digital Invest (MDI), a pre-seed venture capital fund launched in 2022, specializing in media and digital ventures. Previously, in 2009, he founded Moteur.ma, a classified ads media platform that became the leading marketplace for buying and selling new and used cars in Morocco.
In 2021, Abderrazak solidified his position as a successful figure in Morocco’s digital startup scene when Moteur.ma was valued at $5 million. His personal exit, valued in the eight-figure range (in Moroccan dirhams), followed the acquisition of the platform by Frontier Digital Ventures, a member of CATCHA GROUP.
Abderrazak attributes his resilience as an entrepreneur over the past 12 years to having a single, ambitious plan—committed with total dedication, without a fallback option or Plan B. He describes this mindset as his life’s mission.
Early Career and Bootstrapped Journey
Coming from modest beginnings, Abderrazak initially developed a passion for gaming before teaching himself software and web programming. His primary motivation was to quickly achieve financial independence. During his twenties, he engaged in informal entrepreneurship, completed his engineering training, and eventually established Webo, a web development agency.
Although the agency’s international client work was lucrative, its reliance on intermediaries, lack of market visibility, and competition from democratized web creation tools led to challenges. This prompted Abderrazak to pivot strategically, launching Moteur.ma in 2009 as a vertical classified ads platform focused on automobiles. Leveraging the agency’s SEO expertise, the platform quickly gained traction, attracting tens of thousands of daily visitors.
Scaling Moteur.ma
To sustain the platform’s growth, Abderrazak sought external investment. While Moteur.ma offered free ad postings and monetized through online advertising and paid ad promotions, its success required significant cash flow. In 2015, Abderrazak secured his first round of funding from Frontier Digital Ventures, a fund specializing in classified startups in emerging markets. The funds were primarily directed toward marketing and customer acquisition to compete with established leaders like Avito and Bikhir.
As Moteur.ma grew its market share, it diversified its revenue streams. Abderrazak repositioned the platform to target premium customers buying high-end used cars and shifted toward premium advertising. This involved direct integration with the marketing and sales channels of vehicle importers and distributors.
Through extensive A/B testing over a year, the platform developed a successful proof of concept, driving significant qualified traffic with high conversion rates for new car purchases. Offers tailored to user data—such as language, model preferences, and price range—enhanced this success.
Innovations and Exit
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Moteur.ma launched Testdrive.ma, a service enabling users to schedule test drives online, converting over 22,800 leads during the lockdown. After four years of losses, the platform broke even in its fifth year and achieved its first positive financial results in the sixth year.
In 2021, following the successful acquisition of Moteur.ma by Frontier Digital Ventures, Abderrazak exited the venture in cash.
Founding Media Digital Invest
Post-exit, Abderrazak established Media Digital Invest (MDI) with the mission of not only financing but also fostering the growth of the startup ecosystem. Through MDI, he champions initiatives aimed at inspiring young entrepreneurs, promoting coworking spaces, facilitating business networking, and providing mentorship.
Starting BUSINESS+
Abderrazak Yousfi launched BUSINESS+, a podcast dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs and professionals by exploring the challenges and opportunities of business and innovation in Morocco and the MENA region.
The podcast features interviews with industry leaders, deep dives into emerging trends, and actionable advice for navigating the complexities of the entrepreneurial landscape.
