I've just come across this page, and notice that many of the people listed on it are no longer councillors in County Sligo, and many of the current crop of local councillors of County Sligo are not listed here. I'm going to see if I can start adding the current councillors to the list, but I don't wish to remove past councillors unless I'm sure that I should. Secondly, if I create articles for the current crop of Borough of Sligo councillors, should they be included here, or should I create a separate Category for them (i.e., Category:Local councillors in Sligo Borough or some such? Any thoughts? --The.Q(t)(c)14:31, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The general principle with categories is that unless otherwise specified, they do not distinguish between current and former. Since this category is not divided in this way, it should continue to include former councillors, even if they are dead ... and this category isn't populated anywhere near heavily enough to justify splitting it into current and former councillors. Similarly, there's no need to create a separate sub-cat for the borough councillors, because there aren't enough articles on them.
As to more articles on councillors please do read WP:BIO, particularly the basic criteria and the special exceptions for politicians; the latter stresses that local councillors are not automatically notable, and that notability of a councillor can only be established by evidence that they meet the primary notability criterion of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." It may be that some of the current Sligo councillors are notable, but most of them seem to me to be lucky to get a very occasional passing mention in the Sligo Champion or the Weekender. To get an idea of how other councillors have been viewed in AFD debates, see some previous AFDs for local councillors (I noiminated lots of them earlier this year). Those deleted include: Jimmy Harte, Jim O'Leary, Sean Lynch, Mary Doherty, John McGinley, Bobby McKee, Diana Peacocke and Roy Wilson. Articles that were kept include Frank McCoubrey and Daithí Doolan (who was was initially deleted but restored at a 2nd AFD, because it was felt that notability had by then been established.
Thanks for that, it surely does help. I just wasn't sure about current/former members, but the rest of it I was aware of. I had created an article previously for Tom MacSharry, which was summarily deleted (correctly, I might add). I wasn't up to speed on WP:BIO at the time. I'll see what (if anything) i can scare up on any who might fit the criteria in WP:BIO#Politicians. Thanks again, --The.Q(t)(c)13:33, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
