André Hoelz

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

André Hoelz is a German-American structural cell biologist. Currently, he is the Mary and Charles ferkel Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).[1][2] He is best known for his research on the structure and function of the nuclear pore complex (NPC) and its role in nucleocytoplasmic transport.[3][4]

Early Life and Education

[edit]

André Hoelz completed his early education in Germany before pursuing advanced studies in the United States. He trained at prestigious institutions before joining the faculty at Caltech.[5]

Research

[edit]

Hoelz’s research focuses on the structural biology of nucleocytoplasmic transport, particularly the nuclear pore complex (NPC).[6] His laboratory has made major contributions to understanding the NPC's structural architecture and its role in regulating the transport of molecules between the nucleus and the cytoplasm.[7] He has employed techniques such as X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy to reveal the molecular details of the NPC, with implications for understanding diseases related to defects in nuclear transport, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.[8]

His lab is also known for its work on mRNA export, exploring how messenger RNA is transported from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, a key step in gene expression.[9]

Grants and Funding

[edit]

Andre Hoelz’s research has been supported by several major grants, including funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).[10]

Selected Publications

[edit]

Hoelz has authored numerous high-impact research papers in leading scientific journals, covering topics related to cell biology and structural biology, particularly nucleocytoplasmic transport.[11]
