Towns vs villages
Queensland geography does not have a concept of villages. It has a concept of towns (a centre of urban population which is unbounded) and localities/suburbs (bounded areas). The lists in this article are very confusing! Kerry (talk) 08:44, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
- Localities and villages are the same. Vic Park (talk) 01:27, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
Merge List of Mackay suburbs here

- To merge List of Mackay suburbs to Mackay Region for short text, context and overlap; long-standing unreferenced claims. Klbrain (talk) 12:30, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
This article, Mackay Region, already includes a list of Mackay suburbs. Furthermore, the current List of Mackay suburbs is completely unreferenced and duplicates information that you can automatically get from the Category tag Category:Suburbs of Mackay, Queensland. For this reason, it seems reasonable to redirect to Mackay Region. If you disagree with this, @Vic Park, then please add at least one citation to List of Mackay suburbs (and preferably a bit of preamble (with citations) to contextualise the list, to make it different from the Category page). - Oppose The article is featuring in the Template:Suburb lists in Australia. We are supposed to maintain and expand entries in that template, not reducing it. N. Mortimer (talk) 11:57, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

- We the editors. The main purpose for creating that template is to make a list of Australian suburb lists. We should expand that template by creating more of these articles, not less. N. Mortimer (talk) 14:39, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- @N. Mortimer Could you provide a link where this was discussed? Cielquiparle (talk) 04:16, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
- No. I didn't say there was a discussion. I said the general purpose for creating that template is to maintain a list of Australian suburb lists. By deleting this article, we are defeating the purpose of maintaining that template. That template was created and maintained by many different users, so obivously there is a consensus for articles like this to be kept instead of deleted. N. Mortimer (talk) 01:41, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- Actually, that template is quite helpful because it shows that several of the links are redirects to sub-sections of other articles. So it suggests that we can do the same for List of Mackay suburbs. (And no, the fact that many different users have come through and performed maintenance on the template doesn't necessarily mean there is any kind of consensus.) The list should still meet the basic criteria for a standalone list per WP:NLIST and include at least one citation to a reliable source. Cielquiparle (talk) 16:24, 8 June 2024 (UTC)

- Restore it to an earlier version The article was originally for a list of the suburbs of the city of Mackay, Queensland in the sense of those localities which are residential in character and regarded as forming part of the urban area of the town. Take a look at the article as it was in this version. In many cities, these lists of suburbs means those localities which are residential in character and geographically contiguous, but Mackay has some oddities in that it has its beach surburbs which are discontiguous pockets. However, recent edits have added in every regional town and rural locatity which are in the local government area of Mackay Region, which is a much larger area than Mackay itself. I propose we restore the article to its original purpose, where it does something useful (distinguishes which parts of the Mackay Region are the suburbs of Mackay). I agree it certainly serves no particuarly useful purpose in its current form, as the list of towns etc in the Mackay Region are in that article already. Kerry (talk) 23:16, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
- Because Mackay is a growing city, over time more rural localities become its residential suburbs. A good way to decide what is or isn't "in" Mackay is to let the Australian Bureau of Statistics decide and use their map on the "Urban Centres and Localities" entry for Mackay in the latest census, in this case [1] which constitutes a reliable source for citing the list. Kerry (talk) 23:23, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Kerry Raymond Could you add a citation to the actual article? The problem is that the lack of citations is what is causing this list to show up as one of the longest-tagged articles – "unreferenced" for nearly 16 years. (I looked at the link you provided but couldn't easily find the suburbs part.) Cielquiparle (talk) 14:09, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
- It's a map of the urban area, so if the suburb is within the boundaries of the UCL (zoom in on the map), it's suburban in character in the the ABS's opinion. I obviously can't add the citation to the article under the content matches it. But it's a normal style census citation

- Redirected rather than merging, as there is no referenced content, and the target is already more complete than the stand-alone page. Klbrain (talk) 12:30, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
