Great to see that this article has been created. It does need inclusion of details of past bid attempts, and to make it a bit less like a promotion for the current bid, but it is a great start! -- Chuq (talk) 03:42, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
I have now added some more details of the earlier bids, but this information was found on other wikipedia pages and I have no external references, so any would be greatly appreciated. I think that the article is starting to take shape, but does still need a few tweaks. More current information would also be helpful! MJW 45 (talk) 11:49, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Support
"There are notable followings in Tasmania of Hawthorn[8], North Melbourne[9], St Kilda[10], Collingwood[11]. In addition, Hawthorn and St Kilda have played "home" games in the state and built up followings. As a result, it is argued that it may be difficult to convert these followers to support a new club that represents Tasmania." Well I'd suggest that either Hawthorn or Essendon are the most supported teams here. Aaroncrick (talk) 09:57, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
Reality Check
Pie in the sky stuff. The AFL will go after other areas in Australia first. They will try to get a third team in Sydney and a team in Canberra before Tasmania. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.22.23.9 (talk) 07:00, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
- Demitriou has said that Tasmania is next in the chute after the Gold Coast and West Sydney. Is that "Pie in the Sky"? AFL-Cool 12:39, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- The reality check is more so that the AFL has struggled to compete with the A-League and NRL for bums on seats at Giants games. They perhaps should have investigated Tasmania before they did Western Sydney and the Gold Coast. It could be well argued particularly in the case of the Giants that the AFL was stirring the pot by going into NRL but more particularly soccer territory and that it's backfired. While there is some belief there is sort of soft market for AFL on the Gold Coast the success or lack there of the Suns has yet to be determined --Orestes1984 (talk) 07:27, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
Differentiation from AFL team article
With the decision imminent, it is probably worth discussing what should happen with this article. I would suggest that the history of the state's ambitions for the AFL is significant enough to warrant keeping this an article about that topic, and a new article be created for the team itself. I've been linking to Tasmanian AFL team which re-directs here; but that would be an ideal place to start building out a separate article, with a rename occurring when the team name is unveiled. Maybe down the line this article could be renamed to Establishment of [club name] but there's nothing wrong with the existing name for now. I've also just created Macquarie Point Stadium for content about the new stadium. -- Chuq (talk) 06:17, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- I would move this article to History of the Tasmanian AFL bid immediately if/when a Tasmanian AFL club is announced. Including all content from this article (even with the necessary cleanup) would be a due weight concern on the club's main page. Establishment of... wouldn't be the right name because it would imply an article about the actual club, not about the overall 30 year proposal and bid process. Aspirex (talk) 21:54, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks @Aspirex:. That does sound better. I notice multiple news outlets are reporting the new team entry as confirmed after the club presidents vote today. Not sure if it should wait for something formal from the AFL itself? -- Chuq (talk) 04:07, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- Probably should wait. The article will look a lot better with certainties than likelys. Aspirex (talk) 21:49, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- All official. We now have Tasmanian AFL team (to be renamed when appropriate) and History of the Tasmanian AFL bid. I've also updated some templates, and I notice many have been busy updating Australian Football League and no doubt many others. -- Chuq (talk) 05:15, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

Individual bids
I notice an Infobox has been added, but it seems to merge elements of multiple bid attempts. The same applies to many other sections of the article. Now that the history has a defined start and finish, is it worth treating each attempt more discretely? And also avoid the WP:RECENTISM? The lede makes it clear there were eight distinct attempts, but I can't work out from the body exactly what and when each attempt was. I can't find Michael Kent's name in the article for example. I suspect in the coming days/months there will be quite a few retrospectives in the media so we should have plenty of sources available. I'll create a table below in an attempt to structure it.
Attempt # | 1 (discussion) |
2 (formal bid 16th license) |
3 (formal bid 17th/18th) |
4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 (formal bid 19th license) |
