British folklore? Patrick Swayze movie? Led Zepplin song? This page needs a disambiguation.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.171.7.26 (talk) 04:49, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
Would someone please explain the logic behind notability? JHunterJ removed the reference to the Black Dog dojinshi group, which has published numerous works; yet the reference to a Cowboy Bebop character stays. I really don't see why a cartoon character (which only appeared in a single series) would be more notable than someone who draws cartoons; explain, please? Not that it really matters, I suppose. My mistake, wasting time adding knowledge to Wikipedia, rather than looking for a specialized wiki out there. I shall go do so now, and never contribute to Wikipedia again. May you choke on your own notability, or lack of it; and may Wikipedia wither under the weight of arbitrary and pointless deletions, and take the deletionists with it. 88.112.71.108 (talk) 18:14, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Things with a Wikipedia article are notable enough for inclusion in the disambiguation page, which serves to disambiguate Wikipedia articles, not list everything associated with the dab term. Since the dojinshi group has no Wikipedia article, it doesn't need to be disambiguated from other Wikipedia articles. See WP:D and WP:MOSDAB for the disambiguation guidelines. -- JHunterJ (talk) 22:09, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
Black dog as a metaphor
The term black dog is often used as a metaphor for depression (or mood disorders) - referencing Winston Churchill.
See: https://jppreston.com/2013/09/21/the-history-of-the-black-dog-as-metaphor/ and: https://psychcentral.com/lib/when-the-black-dog-starts-growling-5-steps-to-leash-your-depression/
However, this disambiguation page offers no suggestion of such. It really should be included. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.135.192.225 (talk) 13:19, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
Correction - it only mentions such under "medical". This is a bit misplaced and deserves a separate entry of its own - after all, the expression has it's own history and usage that makes it distinct and noteworthy. It does not necessarily specifically refer to major depressive disorder. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.135.192.225 (talk) 13:25, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
Requested move 27 May 2021

No consensus to move. After much-extended time for discussion, there is no consensus for a move at this time. BD2412 T 19:43, 26 June 2021 (UTC)
Black dog → Black Dog – The concurrent Talk:Black Dog (song)#Requested move 27 May 2021 has highlighted the fact that among the 29 entries at the Black dog disambiguation page (with "Black Dog" redirecting to it), 25 entries use the uppercase "D" and only four entries use the lowercase "d". — Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 22:02, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- I don't think it's terribly important which capitalisation we go for in the title, but my instinct is to prefer lower case if there's at least one entry that is a lower-case common noun. If the dab page is titled "Black Dog" my assumption would be that all the entries are proper nouns, whereas the title "Black dog", at least for me, can more naturally accommodate the expectation that there will be both proper and common nouns listed. – Uanfala (talk) 14:16, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
- Another concurrent RM — Master plan → Master Plan at Talk:Master plan#Requested move 3 June 2021 — features a scenario in which not a single disambiguation page entry uses the form "Master plan", but a number of those dab page entries are titled "Masterplan". —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 23:19, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
- Master Plan doesn't list any articles titled "Master plan (x)" while this one includes Black dog (ghost) and Black dog (coin). There are many cases like Friendly Fire where the DAB is at the title case version and an article is at the sentence case base name (Friendly fire) per WP:DIFFCAPS but as noted this DAB has several of each and doesn't appear to have a primary topic for either though views[[1]] suggest it could be the ghost. - Oppose. Against the numbers is encyclopedic significance, that is, weighing scholarly topics higher than commercial topics, the leading topics would be Major depressive disorder and Black dog (ghost). Also, Dog coat#Colors # black has to feature. Consider instead separating Black Dog (disambiguation) from Black dog (disambiguation). --SmokeyJoe (talk) 07:27, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- Per WP:DABCOMBINE we almost never have separate DABs for both sentence case and title case. Crouch, Swale (talk) 10:59, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- That’s an observation, not a rule. SmokeyJoe (talk) 12:40, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- Regardless, it shows remarkable disregard for reader interests to have multiple disambiguation pages for different capitalizations of the same term. older ≠ wiser 13:00, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- "Terms that differ only in capitalization, punctuation and diacritic marks. These should almost always share a disambiguation page.". The idea is that although we have have different primary topics (or lack of one) for certain capitalizations is that otherwise readers who type "Black dog" looking for a proper noun will need to find the "See also" and click there and then click on the desired article and vice versa for readers searching "Black Dog" looking for a generic meaning. Crouch, Swale (talk) 16:24, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- This could be considered an unusual case, the DAB page dominated by composition titles and none of them a primary topic. You point out extra clicks for people wanting Black Dog but who jump to Black dog. Not “search”.
- If the whole DAB list were moved to Black Dog it would be worse for those who did NOT want a composition title. SmokeyJoe (talk) 06:36, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
