Commonwealth Elementary School was established in 1973 by Maria Deyro-Galang, a mother of 10 children, the wife of Conrado Manansala-Galang, a school teacher of Kalookan High School.

Back then, there was no nearby school in Barangay Gao, Quezon City where she lived. Maria knew the importance of education. This propelled the teacher to devote her spare time to build a school that will teach the young Filipinos.

Maria went to Quezon City Hall to meet Mayor Norberto S. Amoranto. The 35 year old high school teacher met Mayor Amoranto and told him of her wish to have a school in Barangay Gao. The mayor understood the importance. He gave Maria a letter authorizing her to choose a location where the school will be erected within the property of Barangay Gao. The dream started to become a reality.

Officials of Barangay Gao, headed by Barangay Captain Inocencio Deyro[1], the older brother of Maria, immediately constructed classrooms using roofs, bamboos and nipa. The first classroom of Commonwealth Elementary School (CES) was seen by the public. It was made of nipa, bamboo and a roof that served as a wall.

The first teacher was from Balara Elementary School named Flora Gavito; she was assigned as the Teacher-In-Charge of CES. The school was then opened for Grade I and II pupils.

Maria continued to teach at Kalookan High School after CES was erected. And for her, this is one of the best legacies that she can contribute as a public school teacher.

Commonwealth Elementary School is now considered as one of the biggest Elementary School in the country, and it is one of the world's most populous grade schools.
