Huang Mei
[edit]Huang Mei is an author, curator, and translator with over thirty years of experience residing in Germany and China. She is known for her contributions to contemporary art and literature, often exploring personal themes of resilience and transformation.
Biography
[edit]Mei's life and work have been shaped by significant personal challenges, including a battle with advanced cancer. During this period, she continued to work independently while raising her child as a single mother. Her experience informs much of her artistic output, emphasizing perseverance and personal growth.
She is the President of Flake e.V., the German Association for the Promotion of International Exchange in Art and Education, and the founder of the Berlin-based art space mamae720 – Moving Meditation Art Experience.
Her biography, "Love Until Death", was published in China in 2018. An extended English edition was scheduled for release in Australia in 2020, and a French edition is currently in the process of translation.
Artworks
[edit]Mei's primary art collection, titled "20000+", includes installations, videos, photography, and performances. The project is inspired by her personal experience as a single mother living with advanced cancer, utilizing medical artifacts such as artificial bags as a primary medium.
Over two decades, Mei used approximately 20,000 artificial bags, a motif reflected in her work. Coloplast, a medical supply company, sponsored 20,000 unused medical bags for her project, which she transformed into art pieces.
She has collaborated with artists including Giovanni De Feo, Anna Maria Baur, Chen Xu, Lü Xiaofang, Stefanie Schulz, Sonja Merz, and Damur.
Themes and Impact
[edit]Mei's work often explores themes of continuity, survival, and personal strength. The collection "20000+" reflects the idea of persistence, symbolizing the continuity of life, art, and love through challenging experiences.
