Just some advice on a couple of points

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your contribution to Wikipedia. But can I offer you a little advice. First, you are marking your edits as "minor" when you probably should not be. As documented here Help:Minor edit, only trivial things like fixing spelling etc that don't change the information of the article are "minor" and implies it does not need review as nobody could possibly object to it. As I see in Inland Rail, you are adding new information, which is not "minor". If you are unsure if an edit is minor, then don't tick it. And you need to provide a citation for new/changed information. I see you did try to create citations in Draft:Plastic Sleepers but seemed to be struggling with doing so.

As you are not using the Visual Editor (which is a lot more like using Microsoft Word), I can see why creating citations is not easy for you. Many new contributors find the Visual Editor much easier to use as it allows them to focus on writing useful content rather than trying to deal with all the complex symbols. Can I suggest you enable the Visual Editor by going to
* "Preferences" (top right of screen), then choose the
* "Editing" tab, then scroll down to
* "Editing mode" and change the
* "dropdown" box beside/below it to
* "Show me both editor tabs", then scroll down more and click
* "Save" (lower left). Now when you look at an article, you will see two options
* *"Edit" (which allows you to edit using the Visual Editor) and
* *"Edit source" which allows you to do text edits as you have been doing.

In Visual Editor, to create a citation the easy way, click at the end of the sentence and then click
"Cite" on the toolbar,
"Manual", "Website" and then fill in the form (the boxes marked with a "*" are required). Then click
"Insert". This creates more useful citations than just putting
<ref>http://blahblah</ref>. There are other options there for citing news reports, books, journals etc. If you need help, please just ask me. Kerry (talk) 01:21, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of China railway signalling

[edit]

Hello MountVic127,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged China railway signalling for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly indicate why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Notice

The article Organisation for the Combined Operations of Railways has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (companies) requirement. WP:BEFORE did not reveal any significant English-language coverage on Gnews, Gbooks or Gscholar. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page here in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back through WP:ECHO or by leaving a note at User talk:Piotrus. Thank you.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. An article you recently created, African Integrated High Speed Railway Network, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It also appears to duplicate the article you have already started at Draft:AIHSRN. I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Deletion discussion about China railway signalling

[edit]

Hello, MountVic127, and welcome to Wikipedia. I edit here too, under the username Whiteguru, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, China railway signalling, should be deleted, as I am not sure that it is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia in its current form. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/China railway signalling.

You might like to note that such discussions usually run for seven days and are not ballot-polls. And, our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Whiteguru}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Railway Sleeper in Ghana with provision for dual gauge and gauge widening.gif

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Railway Sleeper in Ghana with provision for dual gauge and gauge widening.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Non-free rationale for File:Train of one gauge loaded onto train of another gauge.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Train of one gauge loaded onto train of another gauge.gif. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Deletion nomination of "Train of one gauge loaded onto train of another gauge"

[edit]

Hello MountVic127,

(Just pipped to the post by the previous (automated) comment!)

I have just tagged [[File:Train of one gauge loaded onto train of another gauge.gif]] for deletion, because you did not provide details to satisfy a fair-use rationale (and I can't imagine, given the source, that you'd be able to).

That might sound a bit brutal, but let me explain that a friend of mine, when I mentioned the image and my disappointment that it would soon be automatically deleted, said he had a hard-copy version of the Commonwealth Railways original. So I scanned and uploaded it yesterday to Wikimedia Commons (here). I was able to do that because, as an image of the former Commonwealth Railways, it's licensed CC BY 4.0 under the Australian Government Open Data policy.

... which leads me to thank you very much indeed for uploading the image in the first place! My search for a copyright-licensed image of the Marree line piggybacking had been fruitless — the ones I found were by long-dead photographers and the copyright owners couldn't be found. So I was delighted. I'll be adding it to an upgrade I'm doing on the Central Australia Railway article.

May I make some observations?

  • Wikipedia has preferred in recent times that an image to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and the Wikipedia article to be linked to it.
  • Allocating "Fair use" to an image that's within the copyright protection period, i.e. more recently than 1 January 1955 for Australian images, doesn't clear Wikipedia's requirements. (And "fair use" has a different meaning in Australia compared to the US.)
  • The Information details I inserted in the new image page in Commons might be worth comparing against what you put in yours, which wouldn't have got over the bar on fair use (I'm thinking especially of the info against Source (incomplete), Author (means Photographer – which Harding wasn't), Replaceability and Replaceability_text (doesn't provided needed info), Minimality (tongue-in-cheek?)  ;-)
  • I used to add "help" in curly brackets at the beginning of the Information section on an image page to ask a helper to check over the details I had added; I found it useful.

When I make those observations I'm acutely aware of the huge amount of info that needs to be taken on board to do most things on Wikipedia, which has taken me years to be confident about – and I was all at sea when I read the huge amount of detail in the "deletion" policy! But I hope it helps rather than being gratuitous. (If you know all that already, I apologise.)

Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you'd like to discuss.

Best wishes, Simon – SCHolar44 🇦🇺 💬  at 23:19, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:Train of one gauge loaded onto train of another gauge.gif

[edit]
⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Train of one gauge loaded onto train of another gauge.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:53, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hi MountVic127! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor at Triple E-class container ship that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia – it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. Control copyright icon Hello MountVic127, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your additions to Transport in Benin have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. All other images must be made available under a free and open license that allows commercial and derivative reuse to be used on Wikipedia.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 13:09, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:57, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Draft:ENSCO, Inc requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://railway-news.com/enscos-rail-division-opens-office-in-colorado-springs/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. An article you recently created, Olmedo - Medina del Campo test track, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Stored Chemical Energy Propulsion System requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. dudhhr talk contribs (he/they) 05:58, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I do not think Pay Toilets met the deletion criteria cited above, so I declined to speedy delete it. However, as it cited no sources for its content, and appeared to be a very incomplete work in progress that did not adequately define what it was purporting to describe, I have moved it to draft. It can be found at Draft:Pay Toilets. You can continue to work on it there and it will not be deleted unless it goes 6 months without being edited. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 14:30, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Abu Amama has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

One source, crystal ball. When built, if it turns out to be notable, can be re-created.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice that AuthorShare, a page that you created, has been tagged for deletion. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. — kashmīrī TALK 23:05, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article AuthorShare has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The subject of article is a business project set up in mid-2021 by a few UK-based publishers and aimed at collecting royalty payments on used books. The only source is a single blog post (although the project is also mentioned on a handful of other websites). There is little content if any. As Wikipedia is not a collection of things that merely exist, I propose the article to be deleted or moved to draft.

— kashmīrī TALK 16:14, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Instant run-off voting (Poem 2024-06-06) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about something invented/coined/discovered by the article's creator or someone they know personally, and it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Inappropriate additions to article about years

[edit]

Please stop trying to rail gauges to articles about years, as you have tried to do to 1600, 762, 610, 1524, 1676 and 1067 among others.

There are two significant issues with these edits. First, they are unsourced - proper sourcing is required in Wikipedia. Claims about the percentage of the world's railways that are a specific gauge definitely need a source. Second theses pages are about the years involved and should only contain items related to that year. They are not about the number. So adding rail gauges in inappropriate as has been pointed out to you multiple times.

Three less critical, but still important points. If you want to display a railway gauge use the TrackGauge template: eg {{TrackGauge|610mm}} which produces 610 mm (2 ft). Second the Convert template does accept inch as a parameter, eg {{Convert|24|inch}} which produces 24 inches (610 mm). Finally you should never include a comment like "(Convert doesn't like "inch" parameter)" in an article. Articles should only include text relevant to their subject and never commentary about how a template doesn't work, or similar. Opolito (talk) 11:25, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

A tag has been placed on Rebecca Weisser requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:47, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
