Some proposed changes

Information to be added: Trust and Safety Gumtree takes its responsibilities to its users and business partners more seriously than ever before. The business offers a dedicated Trust and Safety Team that focuses on making the platform safe, including a team of specialists actively fighting fraud. In addition, Gumtree also uses anti-fraud technology to prevent known offenders from posting ads on the site and sends out warning messages to potential victims when blocking reported fraudsters.

At help.gumtree.com, users can better understand and protect themselves against potential threats. The newly designed Help Centre details everything from how Gumtree protects its user’s identity to how users can report fraudulent or unscrupulous users.

However, as transactions aren’t carried out on the site, the business has a particularly strong focus on making people safe before the user-to-user transaction phase. This includes actions such as: • Automating the detection and removal of sites that spoof or pretend to be Gumtree • Identifying fraud patterns, links and trends • Continually analysing data and updating systems, creating new rules to catch and combat fraudsters • Automatically updating and maintaining blacklists across a variety of different factors and circumstances

In addition to technological investments, in recent months and years Gumtree has also introduced a range of measures to make the platform a more hostile environment for criminals, including: • Putting additional resource into law enforcement liaison capability • Introducing HPI checks on all vehicles listed in the Motors category • Revamping the online Help Centre and safety messaging

Trust and safety is an industry-wide issue, and all companies have a responsibility in not only making people feel safe, but educating them about the risks involved. At Gumtree, due to the close collaborative relationships built with law enforcement agencies, Gumtree is continuing to work to bolster its crime-fighting capability.
