New Image College (commonly abbreviated as NIC) is a PTIB-accredited[1] private academy for film acting, makeup artistry, aesthetics, hairdressing and nail design located in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia.[2] New Image College consists of two locations: their main student campus is located at Granville[3] and Nelson and their corporate offices at Granville and Pender.

New Image College is EQA[4]-designated by the BC Ministry of Education,[5] and a Designated Learning Institution with CIC.

New Image College is a branch of the multimedia and venture capitalist corporation Global Model and Talent Inc., which is a multi-faceted organization comprising New Image Entertainment,[6] LD Vacations, ShyDaTry Service and Product Inc., Phrike Film Festival,[7] NIC Spa Inc.[8] and other numerous ventures.

History

New Image College was founded in 1980 by the Canadian-born husband and wife team Bill and Charlotte Dyck.[9] Both were extensively trained as clinical marriage and family physiologist, with years of philanthropy work[10] within BC and around the world, specifically India and China. The pair conceived New Image with the goal of providing an opportunity for abused women to develop a "new image" for themselves.

Initially focusing on fashion design, etiquette courses, and self-confidence seminars, the business was considerably expanded when it was taken over by their daughter, Charie Van Dyke.

Under the guidance of New Image College President Van Dyke and her husband, Vice President John Craig, the business would develop into one of the most respected and successful private academies in Canada, boasting over 25,000 alumni.

As of 2016, New Image has expanded even further after acquiring their 'Creative Arts Campus' on the corner of Granville and Nelson. According to Van Dyke, "Granville Street is one of the most vibrant hubs for culture, art and youth in BC. We have always prided ourselves on being at the cutting edge of our industry – so we felt it was a perfect fit".

New Image College recently rebranded itself with the name "NIC" alongside the launch of its much-anticipated NIC Spa line.[8] The NIC Spa on Granville, a private branch of Global Model & Talent, provides opportunities for alumni of New Image College's aesthetics program to begin their small businesses through the college's Entrepreneurial Program.

In 2014, the NIC creative team in association with New Image Entertainment founded Vancouver's first 72-hour horror filmfest, The Phrike Film Festival. Aimed at providing a platform for aspiring filmmakers to create art, The Phrike Fest opened up in October prior to Halloween and received over 70 submissions in his inaugural year.

The festival challenged new and experienced filmmakers to create a horror related short film in less than 72 hours. With elements like an unknown prop, a specific line of dialog and an already prepared clip of footage that all had to be included in the finished films - the teams were further challenged when they were told to pick a specific theme out of a hat upon arrival.

The festival's founder, John Craig had this to say; "Providing opportunities for the creative community to come together, and to give them a platform where they can not only create films but the chance to network and develop as artists are huge. On top of that, we are also providing them the chance to have their films screened and enjoyed. It's incredible fun and also a great chance to give back."

With the top film vying for a $5,000.00 dollar cash grand prize and the coveted Goblin Award, the competition was stiff. Phrike saw over 36 completed films at the end of 72 hours and accumulated over 3 million unique impressions on Google.

The Phrike judging panel included the iconic Doug Jones, Oscar winner Tom Woodruff Jr., famed talent manager Murray Gibson, executive producer of Motive Rob LaBelle, Canadian acting icons Tyler Labine & Locklyn Munro, Breakfast Television host Thor Diakow, and renowned casting agent Judy Lee.

With over 30 thousand in prizes to be won from key sponsorship that included, New Image College, IATSE Local 891, Studio FX, End of The Roll, Copy That Radios, Silent Partners, Make Up For Ever, Picture Cars West, Gearhouse Rentals, (dinner with) celebrity Tom Woodruff Jr., Pacific Backlot, Casting Workbook, Shimon Photography, ACT5, Fibertek and William F. White.

The 2014-2015 Phrike FilmFest was a huge success and its creative team look forward to its follow-up year! To apply to the festival visit: http://www.phrikefilmfest.com/
