An elimination tournament is a type of tournament in which each player has a set amount of loses before losing eligibilty for the first prize of the event.[1][2] The most common type of elimination tournament is single-elimination. In single-elimination tournaments, opponents can lose only one game before being excluded from winning the contest. Likewise, in double-elimination and triple-elimination tournaments, players are allowed two or three loses, respectively, before losing eligibilty for grand prize. Opponents are often paired by seed, or rank, to prevent the highest-rated competitors from facing each other early in the competition. Therefore, the best opponents usually play each other in the championship round. A playoff is a variation of the elimination tournament in which teams commonly compete. In a playoffs series, teams play each other to win a specific amount of games in order to advance to the next round.
